The Story Of Ula Nara

ULA NARA draws its inspiration from one of the most enigmatic women of the Qing dynasty — Empress Nara, known historically as Lady Hoifa-Nara, the second empress consort of the Qianlong Emperor.

Born into the influential Manchu Ula Nara clan, she entered the imperial household before Qianlong ascended the throne.

Over time, she rose through the ranks of the Forbidden City to become Empress in 1750 — a position defined not only by prestige, but by immense restraint, ritual, and political complexity.

Yet her story also carried tragedy. Although not officially deposed, she lost her authority as chief of the imperial harem in 1765. Perhaps the greatest mystery of Qing dynasty is Empress Nara - the reason she fell from imperial favour under circumstances historians still debate today.

Historical accounts describe her as composed, disciplined, and reserved in character. Unlike figures remembered through spectacle or extravagance, Empress Nara became associated with restraint, dignity, and quiet resilience within one of the most complex imperial courts in Chinese history.

It is these attributes inspired ULA NARA.

The brand was created around the belief that beauty does not need to announce itself loudly to endure. Much like the legacy of Empress Nara, the designs embrace restraint, permanence, and quiet confidence over ornament and excess.

At the centre of this philosophy is jade — a material deeply rooted in Chinese culture for centuries. Revered by emperors, scholars, and nobility alike, jade has long symbolised virtue, balance, protection, and continuity across generations. Unlike gemstones valued purely for brilliance, jade reveals its beauty gradually: through translucence, texture, softness, and the marks naturally shaped over time.

ULA NARA honours this character by creating jewellery that feels calm, considered, and enduring. The designs are intentionally refined, allowing the natural beauty of jade to remain the soul of each piece rather than simply decoration.

Inspired by history, shaped by nature, and designed to endure beyond trend, ULA NARA reflects a quieter form of luxury.
